The heart of a janitor
I wasn't gonna post this until I was closer to having my new job, but since I don't plan on making my move 'til late May at the earliest, I'll go ahead and spill the beans now.

JANITOR

Now you're probably thinking, "He must be joking." Well, I'm not. I'm serious. I know the pay generally sucks, but from what I gather, large enough facilities such as hospitals and colleges (just to throw a couple random examples out there) pay a decent enough salary that I can support myself on. I'm not talking something small like a Burger King or a Bowling Ally.
So why a janitor, you're probably wondering. Because it's something I love doing. Let's see, where to start...
I guess it kinda goes back to my AMC days. I've said it before, and it'll probably go for quite awhile: Working at AMC was the best three years of my life. Especially working usher shifts. Portering the lobby and hallways of debris, mopping soda spills, keeping the restrooms clean and stocked, changing trash bags and taking them out to the compactors, cleaning auditoriums between show times... I freaking enjoyed doing that kind of work. I even enjoyed cleaning the nasties, such as urine, vomit, blood, feces, and so on (yes, you'd be surprised at some of the things customers would leave behind). Even working at my current job, when it's time to take care of trash and dirty mats and whatnot at the end of each shift, I always try to be the one who does it. It's work that I enjoy doing, and can totally see myself doing it 40 hours a week.
I see my self as a people person. I enjoy being in others' presence. At both AMC and Raytheon, I've worked in groups and I've worked solo. Although I've enjoyed both, I prefer to work alone. To work at my own pace. To be self motivated. Yet I also like to be around people. Being a daytime janitor (I prefer working morning to afternoon shifts), I can work solo, and at the same time, be in people's presence. 'Course granted that people will usually make little to no eye contact with janitors, I don't think that would be a problem. It's just nice to see someone every now and then while working.
A low salary is the only con I can see so far, which is a biggie (though I can see myself getting by without trouble on around $27000, but I'd probably be required to move to a new apartment complex where the minimal annual income would allow that). But if I can get past that, I really think this is the job for me. It'd probably keep me in shape too (of course in comparison to my current job where I get two hours of break time each day, plus occasional snoozing during down time, what job wouldn't?).
Only problem is, I don't know of any close by places hiring. There's a few Lockheed Martin positions available which require a top secret clearance which I have, but the commute isn't convenient for me. Otherwise, I can't find any openings in my area. But I'm keeping my eye out. I don't really plan on making my move anyway until late May, early June anyway.
...Questions? Comments? Suggestions?

Oh snap. Y'think that would make a good theme for a webcomic? XD

Heh, this sounds very much like the duties of my current job, which I've had for the past three years now. Sure I'm not technically a janitor, but I do a lot of the type of stuff that one would. Its okay, it has its days though. However a huge plus (at least for me) is that I don't have to put on a fake smile and deal with customers (at least not all the time), I can just show up at work and go right into my little routine.

Anyway considering how much you enjoyed AMC (which I was quite envious of ^^) I think this janitor thing is totally worth consideration. Usher Andy's back again!

Why don't you go to college instead! ;) No really! Janitor part-time, school the other! I know we all have to survive, I've supported myself and put myself through school since I was 18 because hi, that wasn't my parent's job anymore, but you could do it Andy!

I need a full time job; can't support myself on a part time salary. I have thought abous school though, and still can, especially since I'll be working day shift all the time and won't have to try and constantly work around shift rotation. I don't think I'll want to do anything with it though, since for the time being anyway, I see myself in 30 years being this super awesome janitor guy who can do any cleaning and repairs what needs doing. But it's still always nice to have college credits.

Well I'm a production assistant, and there's a lot of downtime here and there to read manga and doodle and whatnot. Actually I'll more likely be getting a pay decrease making this change, but hey. Might as well do a job I enjoy doing, right? Not that I don't enjoy what I do currently, but we end in late '09, and they need to lay a lot of people off before then anyway. ..Long story, don't ask. ^^;

right. if it's just you with no one else to support i don't see why you shouldn't just do the job that you want to do the most!

Man, you really like that?? You should try working at a veterinary clinic... all the blood, vomit, urine, and feces you could possibly want! On a daily basis! By the TON, practically!

I can't believe you actually enjoy that... but hey... to each his/her own I guess.

I mean, it's not like I specifically enjoy cleaning those exact types of things; I enjoy janitorial work in general. It's just that some of the nastier things aren't that big a deal to me since I've been there, done that, y'know? It's a job I enjoy, and it's a job I can do.

I know it's waaaaaay out of your local area, but JHU's housekeeping staff is treated VERY well. Financially and otherwise.

I am going to give you the best advice among all the comments; try to be a federal employee janitor. You'll get benefits and be able to retire. Good luck.

The janitors for Lockheed at work only make $27,000? It cost almost that much just to get a clearance. You said the commute is bad for ya? Not really if your get there early enough. should only take you about 15 minutes. If you get there later in the morning "around 8am" I would car pool with ya. We could get a sweet parking spot.
